Soldier Basin
Soldier creek is one of the few places in the Rubies with easy access into the mountains. There is actually a public road to the trail head. You can hike to Soldier basin, which contains 6-8 lakes, depending on your definition of a lake versus a pond. Robinson lake is the largest, and provides good fishing.
The trail immediately crosses a stream and continues along an old road. Watch for snakes along here. Soon after entering the wilderness through a gate begins the 'hell mile'. Here, the trail has no choice but to climb as steeply as the canyon. The creek fairly roars as it falls beside you. This was one of my first hikes in Nevada, and I was amazed at the thick vegetation we had to push through.
After climbing a little over two miles, the trail reaches the top of the canyon, and enters the basin. This spot makes a nice destination in itself.
Of the 2100 ft. climb to the lakes, 1600 ft. is gained in the first half of the hike. The second half is a fairly leisurely climb along open hill sides.
When we hiked into Robinson lake, it was evening. I was ready to pitch the tent, and remarked that it was strange there were no fire rings next to the lake. My son reminded me there was a good reason, since there are no trees next to Robinson lake. Nearby Aspen groves offered a shady camp. Anywhere you camp, you are close to a lake or pond.
The basin gets a fair amount of horse traffic. The trail drops off the East side of the Rubies, into Ruby valley, which would be a fun way to walk out, but a very steep climb to come in that way.
Both evenings, we watched Mule deer feeding on the surrounding hill sides. If Robinson and Soldier lakes are not enough for you, by climbing another 600 ft., you can hike to Hidden lakes. These are alpine lakes located on a cirque shelf.
Length/Elevation: 5 miles to Robinson Lake, one way. Elevation change is 3000 feet, highest elevation is 9100 ft. at Robinson Lake.
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult.
Access to the lower canyon: Drive through Lamoille, turning left (North) at the church and continuing on the gravel road. This road eventually ends at the paved road to Secret pass. There is a sign for Soldier creek. From Lamoille, if you get to the Fort Halleck historical marker, turn around. The Soldier creek turn off is one mile behind you. Drive up the side road about four miles to the trail head at road's end.
Attractions: Several lakes, good fishing, Mule deer.

Trivia Question: The Ruby Crest Trail is a hiking and horse trail running from Lamoille Canyon to Harrison Pass. How many miles in length is it?
